The greatest asset of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is its members. These members represent a large personnel asset of civilian skills, training and backgrounds of significant value to the auxiliary and thus the Coast Guard in helping meet its needs and carry out its missions. Member interests range from the work and challenges of environmental protection to Marine Safety.
As a member of our Flotilla, 10-08, opportunities abound for service and fellowship.
We support Coast Guard Station Oak Island. Several years ago the station burned to the ground. Though there was no loss of life, Auxiliary members from various area flotillas stepped in to provide much needed assistance. Today, Flotilla 10-08 along with other flotillas continues to support the USCG by conducting seasonal tours of Station Oak Island. We also participate in a variety of projects, such as, small construction jobs and minor maintenance tasks whereby we work with the USCG members on vessels and other equipment.
Flotilla 10-08 periodically patrols the Inter Coastal Waterway from Lockwood Folly, NC, to Little River, SC, using our own vessels known as facilities. Each facility is operated by a certified Coxswain and at least one certified crewmember. The training to perform these tasks come from within the flotilla and is certified by a trained qualification examiner from another flotilla.
